Autumn 2011

Autumn has made its final descent in upstate New York with the first scent of Winter approaching on the wind. The wood is stacked, the garlic planted and we are hurriedly digging the necessary medicinal roots before the ground freezes. As our corner of the Earth turns away from the sun, we turn inward towards center in all ways spending more time in our homes with family, friends and ourselves. This is an especially important time of year to take stock of all that has transpired in the past months and be sure that we are fully prepared to face into the cold, patient winter snows where we will receive the nourishment and peace that only comes during times of such deep rest.

This has been an abundant and inspiring year at Hawthorne Hill Herbs with many successful classes completed and many new friends made. There have also been many exciting and thought provoking events occurring around the world this fall with the Occupy Wall street movement bringing all of us to attention about the state of our culture, economy and our livelihoods. Whether or not we agree or disagree with these efforts is not as relevant as the dialogue, consciousness and thoughtfulness that it has provoked amongst us all. This movement has brought to my mind the importance of the spread of Traditional Herbal Medicine as strong form of resistance against the widespread commodification of health care in the United States and other Western countries. Learning about the healing plants that grow in each of ourbioregions and having access to local healers and herbalists is a powerful way to be in solidarity with the movement. I like to call it the Occupy Your Backyard protest.

I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all my readers and students for your continual support and interest and also for providing me the opportunity to share the wisdom, beauty and greatness of the plant kingdom.
